A spirit level also known as a bubble level is device used to indicate whether a surface is level or vertical. It is mostly used by carpenters, stone masons, building trade workers, surveyors, metalworkers, etc. Most of the spirit levels available these days consist of a slightly curved glass tube which is partially filled with a liquid, mostly yellow-coloured spirit (hence the name) and leave a bubble in the tube. Commonly used for measuring how level or plumb a surface is, some spirit levels are also capable of indicating the level of a surface between horizontal and vertical to the nearest degree. A number of sophisticated spirit levels are being designed these days which guarantee accuracy up to five-ten-thousandth of an inch per inch and are easier to read because of the blue-coloured spirit used in them.
