DIY Guide to organizing your ‘Mud Room’

For most of us, the coat closets in our homes are always a nightmare. It is the place where most of us throw in all our things like coats, boots, umbrellas, etc and forget to clean up.

People who live in cold climates and experience long winters require plenty of scarves, mittens, coats, jackets, boots like the Caterpillar Active Alaska that are likely covered in mud, hats, umbrellas to help them through the season. If the family is large, then the mud closet will be brimming with so much of stuff that when the closet door opens things fall out and the close looks completely disorganized and cluttered. It is normal in any home to have a front room closet especially for guests and a backroom closet to store all the family’s stuff.

If your front closet is near empty, try storing some of your boots and coats there. It makes sense to categorize all your outerwear like coats, raincoats and casual wear. After you have categorized, ensure that you keep one category in the front closet while the rest goes onto the back closet.

Your mud room can be planned close to the garage or kitchen so you get some extra space. Get a storage wall built if you are planning to remodel your kitchen. Use unused pantry space to store your boots. Hooks are another excellent option. Using them inside your closets will help you hang your backpacks, jackets and scarves. You should put two levels of hooks so the hooks at the lower level will be ideal for your small children to hang up their things. Organize your mud room in a simple and effective manner.
