One of the easiest DIY projects is giving a facelift to the cabinets in your kitchen. Refacing cabinets can involve repainting them, polishing them or even replacing them with new parts.
If you possess some attractive stemware and china, you can show them off by removing wood from the panel and replacing with glass. It is very easy replacing existing cabinets with custom made cabinets. Custom cabinets are available with features like a tray divider, a wine rack, a facility to stock canned goods in a folding pantry, etc. You can enhance the beauty of the drawers by opting for those with a glass front. Attractive and decorative dry goods like coffee beans, rice, peas, etc can be stored in the front.
Ready made custom cabinets are quite expensive. If you are enterprising enough, you can build your own cabinet incorporating features that you require.
If you are looking to just give a refinish to your kitchen doors and cabinets, the process is quite simple. For this you need some basic materials like an electric drill, such as the Bosch IXO, screwdrivers, sandpaper, sanding block, sheet of plastic, paint and primer, safety mask or glasses, wood putty, dust mask, etc.
As a first step towards refinishing, the handles, hinges and doors must be removed from the cabinets. Frames and doors have to be sanded and plastic sheet has to be hung over the doors. This prevents dust from dirtying the room. After removing old finish with sanding paper, dents and chips have to be filled with wood putty and allowed to dry.
The next step involves applying primer that is oil based to the doors and cabinets, keeping consistent coverage. Finally, with even strokes, oil based paint has to be applied to the doors and cabinets.
