We may find warning instructions on the back cover of a packet of soda crystals that it should not be used on aluminum. Most of our washing machines have alloy drum spiders inside. Using soda crystals to clean the machine could cause serious damage to the aluminum spider drums.
Well, it is a wrong notion that using of soda crystals inside your washing machine is very safe and is an ideal product to get your machine in good working condition. The aluminum drum spider is fixed to the back of the inner drum of the washing machine and it consists of three arms that are made out of some alloy. There is also a steel shaft in the centre. Repair men always refer to the spider drum as being of aluminum but however it is not so. It contains a little of aluminum and is a mixture of alloys.
It is believed that using soda crystals inside your washing machine can cause pitting that can ruin any part made out of aluminum. This is why manufacturers of soda crystals advice and caution consumers against using it in their washing machines, even new ones like the Samsung WF8704. Using soda crystals occasionally to cleanse your washing machine of grease is allowed as there can possible be no harm caused to the machine. Therefore, feel free to use soda crystals only to have your washing machine cleaned of grease or stuck dirt. Your aluminum spider drum will be safe.
